World of Warcraft Suffers Post-Cataclysmic Drop in Subscriptions

Thursday, May 12, 2011 |

Avatar for Mike Fahey Mike Fahey —World of Warcraft Suffers Post-Cataclysmic Drop in Subscriptions Six months after buzz for the Cataclysm expansion drove World of Warcraft numbers to an all-time high, Blizzard reports the lowest subscription figures for the massively multiplayer game since December of 2008.

http://fastcache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2011/05/xlarge_wownumbers.jpgDuring the Activision Blizzard first quarter 2011 financial results conference call today, Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime told us that as of March of this year, World of Warcraft numbers had "returned to pre-Cataclysm levels in the West," which is a rather nice way of saying dropped considerably.

In October 2010, two months before the release of the Cataclysm expansion pack, Blizzard reported that World of Warcraft had exceeded 12 million subscribers. Today Morhaime gave a figure of 11.4 million. That's 600,000 subscribers gone.

Morhaime said that subscriptions had returned to pre-Cataclysm levels. They've nearly dropped to pre-Wrath of the Lich King levels, to be accurate. A month after the second expansion pack's November 2008 release, subscription rates hit 11.5 million. A little over two months' prior they had just hit 11 million.

Of course we've got to mind the gap. It's highly likely that in the nearly two years separating Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm the numbers dropped below 11.5 million and Blizzard simply hadn't reported it.

Still, the numbers are somewhat discouraging. Going strictly by the figures we do have, World of Warcraft lost 600,000 players shortly after the release of a major expansion pack.

I wouldn't dig a grave for World of Warcraft any time soon, however. Considering there are big-name MMO titles out there operating with one one-hundredth of the subscriber base, the world of Azeroth will be in fine shape for years to come.

Angry Birds Rio Beach Volley coming this week

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 |

http://s1.top10static.com/_img/library/news_image/angry_birds_rio_beach_volley_200x150x24.jpgThe first update to Rovio’s Hollywood Angry Birds spin-off, Rio, will be landing this week.

Beach Volley, which the name should make fairly obvious, takes place in the sandy (and sunny) coast of Brazil and features brand new levels festooned with volleyballs, beach umbrellas and monkeys - lots and lots of monkeys.

Levels also contain various new structures such as helicopters and ships to blow up, and plenty of new hard-to-reach items that unlock bonus levels. It’s not confirmed yet exactly how many levels in total will be included but we can expect no less than 15 to wreak havoc in.

Angry Birds Rio, in case you missed the memo, is the result of a collaboration between Rovio and 20th Century Fox which coincided with the release of the Fox’s animated flick Rio last month. While most movie tie-ins tend to be a little on the cheap side, Rovio did a pretty decent job at merging the two universes together and giving players a break from a perpetual slaughter of pigs.

Rovio’s title has already turned into a cultural phenomenon with celebrity endorsements and various toys and plushes already on the market. There’s also a rumour of a TV show in the works, plus a Hollywood animation to give the birds their own spotlight on the silver screen.

Sony EU Offering 2 Free Games as Part of Welcome Back Program

Sunday, May 8, 2011 |

Sony has said before that they’re doing a “Welcome Back” program for the PSN users who’ve been inconvenienced by the PSN’s recent outage before and now we have more details concerning it…for the European market that is.

Sony’s Official EU Blog has just detailed that Sony will be offering PSN users the opportunity to select two PS3 games from a list of five, as well as offering PSP users the opportunity to choose two games from a list of four. Unfortunately, Sony EU has not disclosed what titles will be available to choose from or whether it will let users choose between PS3 and PSN games.

This deal is for the EU market only for now. Although it would make a lot of sense if Sony Computer Entertainment of America did the same thing – which, wouldn’t surprise anyone if they did.

So, if SCEA does go this route, will two free games, along with free PSN Plus for a month and that $1 million protection plan per user be enough as a goodwill gesture for you? Sound off in the comments.

Our 10 Favorite Gods In Video Games

Friday, May 6, 2011 |

10. The Three Goddesses

Game:: Legend of Zelda series
Forever trapped in the shadow of that other Holy Trinity (Jesus, God, and The Holy Spirit), the Three Goddesses don’t get enough credit. They created Hyrule, which is probably just as important as Earth and the galaxy, and definitely more important than Williamsburg. The three deities—Farore, Nayru, and Din—make various appearances across the series, and represent a different part of the Triforce. And also probably Shigeru Miyamoto's three mistresses. Wait, that's totally untrue and probably legally actionable, so forget we said that.

9. Nemesis

Game:: Black & White (2001)
This immortal douche is constantly pouring unholy salt on your game throughout Black & White. After destroying your first village, he proceeds to DDOS you with vortexes (vortices?), curses, and other crap until you’ve finally had enough and forum-banish him like a bitchy little despot of a third-world country.

8. Maiden in Black

Game:: Demon's Souls (2009)
Her eye sockets have been patched and sewn up, which means she’s probably got some baggage. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on what you’re into), she doesn’t take it out on you. Instead, she’s your benevolent soul power dispensary, the only solace in a world that’s darker than an evil bear’s colon during hibernation. And she was probably an extremely powerful demon/deity in the past, which still doesn’t explain her beautifully weird Celtic accent (don't ask, it's the same reason Sinead O'Connor turns us on).

7. King of All Cosmos

Game:: Katamari Damacy series
We’re just going to put it out there: The King of All Cosmos is the post-millennial, sexually liberated interpretation of God. Think about it. His berating and fickle temperament is rooted squarely in the New Testament—He sends his one and only son (The Prince) to Earth and makes him push a giant boulder around. And his kingdom’s borders are only limited to THE ENTIRE COSMOS. If that doesn’t sound familiar to you, then you shouldn’t have been sleeping during Sunday school. Heathen.

6. Sephiroth

Game:: Final Fantasy VII 1997
Sorry, the statute of limitations on spoiler alerts has expired for FFVII: Sephiroth becomes a god at the end of the game, and it’s up to Cloud to put the white-haired bastard in his place.

What’s with the undying fan obsession, though? Sure, he’s an icon of the Playstation era, but he’s actually pretty boring. He just mopes around the backdrop of multiple games, makes emo appearances here and there, kills a few people, and never makes his intent clear.

But he does have white hair. So that makes him weaaboo Jesus.

5. Amaterasu

Game:: Okami (2006)
And now, a haiku:

Ammy the white wolf
Goddess of the Sun and Light
Graffiti Master

*bows*

4. Shiva

Game:: Final Fantasy X (2001)
Admittedly, we always summoned Shiva because she’s easy on the eyes. She’s no Bahamut in terms of raw power, but she can at least make ice from, like, nothing. And we’ve always wondered what her hair smells like (not in a creepy way!), although we’d probably be disappointed. She’s got those earthy vegan dreds in FFX, so we're guessing she smells like seitan and batik.

3. Kratos

Game:: God of War series
Kratos represents the innate human desire to destroy our own gods: hubris is a patricidal genome in our psychological DNA. Speaking of DNA, this realization occurred to us during our sixth playthrough of the Aphrodite sex mini-game. #fap

2. Jesus

Game:: Left Behind: Eternal Forces (2006)
Why are we ranking Jesus second? Because He should have come on down and held a holy press conference denouncing this game when it launched. After all, violence was an option in this weird-ass RTS. Not very Christ-like, Christians! Of course, he also should have stepped in and denounced some of the religious and racial stereotypes that were portrayed, none of which vibe with His holy steez...at least according to The Bible. That's still what you're using, right? Not Glenn Beck?

1. You, the Server Admin

Game:: Counter-Strike (2000)
Is there any other choice for the top spot? CS is one of the few games where you can perform god-like miracles directly upon other human players, such as slapping them around the map for haxxing and/or saying things that you don’t like. And, just as God did to Lucifer, you can server-ban them. As server admin, you are a god for as long as you’re hosting—or at least until your mom tells you to do the goddamn dishes.

The Top Ten Sexiest Video Game Commercials

Thursday, May 5, 2011 |

Okay, so this list is unabashedly done to please this blogger. Let's just say the Editor-in-Chief owed me a favor, so he let me do a list about whatever I so desired. Very obviously, I chose one that would be very fun to research. So, I bring you a list of the video game commercials that incorporate the most hotness per frame.

Despite it being selfish, we all hope you can find some enjoyment in scanning nearly a dozen extra-sexy video game commercials. They are all pretty good -- luckily, the marketing and advertising folks in the game industry know what their core market responds to, and have exploited it thusly. Please have some fun, and if you are at work, wait until you get home! Or until the boss leaves!
10. F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin
The F.E.A.R franchise doesn't get marketed very well. I don't really even remember the commercials for the first game, the second game and the add-ons flew under the radar, and the F.E.A.R. 3 ads use WAY too much live-action to do anybody any good. But there's always an exception to the rule. And this is that exception.
9. Metroid Prime 2: Reconstructing The Suit
Probably the most tasteful trailer on this list, this shows a strikingly beautiful Samus being clad from the feet up in her iconic suit. There's a lot of "hugging" in this video, and it reminds us of why we think Samus is so flipping fine.
8. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 Wii
Okay, okay, what's the deal Nintendo. With the Wii, weren't you supposed to be catering to a broader, more mainstream audience? Doesn't the Wii even have a sticker on it that says "For ages 8-80" or whatever, like all those old Milton-Bradley board games? Considering racy Nintendo Wii commercials take up nearly 1/3 of this list, one could hazard a guess that the Nintendo Wii is actually marketed, specifically, to 13-19 year olds. But hey, that's fine with us as long as videos like this continue to circulate.
7. Nintendo Wii LittleBig Ladies
I don't know what the official name of this video is, but it is a super sexist, very un-P.C. take on the Mac commercials that typically feature the ultra-hip Justin Long and schlubby John Hodgman. But this time it has a roamy brunette chick and a skinny, overenthusiastic blond chick talking about how sexy and awesome the Wii is compared to the PlayStation 3. And I almost believe them.
6. Saint's Row 2: Tera Patrick Dev Diaries
Yeah, in porn star years, Tera Patrick is the same age as Betty White, but damn does she carry it well. We don't even get much boob in this video, but the First Lady of Porn oozes seduction. This Saint's Row 2 video is, well, just that -- seductive. By mixing two of the most important visual stimuli of my formative years (Tera and video games), this trailer perfectly shows how sex sells. And how good Tera Patrick is at selling said sex.
5. Guitar Hero: World Tour With Heidi Klum
Let's just get this out of the way: Heidi Klum is a pretty lady. Watching a few minutes of her dancing around in her undies is way awesome, and no one around here would complain if this video was an hour long. But, if your commercial features the tunes of Bob Seger, there's no way it can land any higher than fifth. He just makes things less sexy.
4. Banned Serena Williams Ad
Didn't think Serena Williams was all that bomb before this ad went viral. But, from it, I learned three things: she is mad hot, she could definitely kick my ass, and she would look incredibly sexy kicking my ass. As a matter of fact, "Get Serena Williams to kick my ass" is now at the very top of my sexual fantasy bucket list. How I'll manage making that happen, well, that's for a different post entirely.
3. MX vs ATV Untamed Carwash Trailer
I don't even remember this game, but I remember this trailer. Featuring two soapy ladies goofing off in a tub. What more could one ask for? Well, maybe three soapy ladies goofing off in a tub. (Note: is it funny that this game is rated E for Everyone, and yet this video is, um, well not.)
2. Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Shower Trailer
Don't complain that this one is animated. Sideboob is sideboob, regardless of if it is real or not and Oncechanbara showcases a lot of sideboob in this shower-laden video. Actually, I ranked these videos exclusively on how much profile-tit they brought to the table. As you can see, Onechanbara did well in that department.
1. Wii Fit Balance Boarding Playmate
I know commentary is totally unnecessary for this one. It absolutely speaks for itself. Yeah, we know it's not an official commercial. Shut up.

We reported earlier that Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has its own security problem stemming from the attacks on the PSN.

We already know that 24.6 million accounts might have been compromised and that approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit cards details might be part of it.

The “good” news is, along with the fact that the info was taken from an outdated database from 2007, is that most of the cards were not valid. Sony is now claiming that “only” 900 of the credit cards listed were still active when the security got breached.

While Sony is still in deep water concerning customer privacy and loyalty, the fact of the matter is 900 is way better compared to more than 10,000. It's not a victory by any means, but it's not as bad as it could have been either, no?

More on the situation as it develops.
