Six Moments When Athletes Cried

Thursday, May 12, 2011 |

We’ve all seen athletes cry before.   Hell many of us have cried as athletes.  It’s easy to get emotional out there as tensions run high and sometimes there’s a lot on the line.
But there’s also those times you can’t help but to laugh at some athletes who cry when you kind of realize they shouldn’t have.   The videos I’m sharing here are not these types of examples.
These are moments where the athletes should have cried and had every right to……
Michael Jordan’s Championship after Dad’s Death
After all that Jordan had been through, retiring, his father’s death, un-retiring, the number change, and really having to prove he was still the same Jordan it all pretty much caught up to him that day.   I think all of us will remember him hogging the trophy but other than that you can’t blame the guy for getting emotional.
The Adam Morrison Moment
It’s kind of awesome when a player cries from the competitive desire in him/her.   When Gonzaga took that heart wrenching defeat Morrison took the floor and the entire nation watched.  It would have been a much much better story had Morrison been a half decent NBA player.   Where’s the competitive fire now buddy?  Come on!
Kevin Garnett is Pissed
In recent years I’ve grown a little tired of Kevin Garnett.   Honestly it’s because I think he’s a “little much.”   But there’s no denying this dude wants to win.  So badly that this interview was pretty famous.   I mean the guy’s a hall of famer, doesn’t have much more to prove but he’s still out there like it’s the NCAA Championship every single night (even though he skipped college)
Tiger Wins 11th Major
Similar to Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods wins one of Golf’s most difficult tournaments and gets emotional as it was his first major without his father being around.   I hope Tiger gets back into form and wins a few more.
Favre’s Retirement Speech
Honestly this is just more comedy than anything else.   If you’ll notice it’s his retirement speech from Green Bay.  Hahahaha.   Screw you Favre.  Seriously buddy, that should have been your crowning moment but everything after was completely unnecessary.
Mike Schmidt Retires
One of true greats of baseball.  It’s tough to keep your composure while watching this.   This guy truly loved the game.  P.S. he didn’t do steroids.

Phil Jackson fined $35K for ref remarks

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 |

http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/nba/med/trans/lal.gifDALLAS -- Just before what could've been the last game of his coaching career, Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson was fined $35,000 for comments about the officiating.

The NBA sent a release less than an hour before tipoff of Game 4 in the Lakers-Mavericks series on Sunday saying Jackson was being punished for statements made Saturday. He complained about officials allowing defenders to lift their legs and use their knees to shove big man Pau Gasol out of position.

On Saturday, Jackson commended the "exceptional" help-side defense Gasol displayed in Game 3 and blamed some of his offensive woes on the officiating.

"I've resisted [saying] this the whole playoffs, but the NBA used to call a 'knee up the a--,' that's what they called it," Jackson said. "You couldn't lift a knee off the floor to run a guy off the post -- they've been doing that every time [against Gasol]. They're taking him out of the post and he can't get a tight post spot. We didn't complain about it against New Orleans, but the Mavs are doing the same damn thing and until the league goes back to the rules that they have about playing post play, Pau's got to move out and face the basket."

Los Angeles went into the game down 0-3 in the series, facing elimination. Jackson has said he's retiring after this postseason.

The Mavs completed the sweep of the defending champions, winning 122-86.

Information from ESPNLosAngeles.com's Dave McMenamin and The Associated Press was used in this report.

A History of (Supposed) Unpatriotic Acts by Athletes

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 |

Muhammad Ali

DATE: 4/28/1967
ACT: Refusing to serve in the Vietnam War.
COMPLEX SAYS: Ali refused to join the Army because of his religious beliefs and opposition to the Vietnam War. "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong ... They never called me nigger," said Ali. Though not really seen as controversial today, Ali's outspoken opposition to Vietnam War caused many to call him a draft dodger while pointing to and praising athletes in the past who served such as Joe Louis and Willie Mays. The then heavyweight champion was also stripped of his title and sentenced to five years in jail (although he didn't end up serving time). After being kept out of the ring for three years during his prime, Ali came back for the title like he never left. #KING

John Carlos and Tommie Smith

DATE: 10/16/1968
ACT: Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics
COMPLEX SAYS: After winning the gold and bronze medals for the 200 meter-dash at the Olympics in Mexico City, John Carlos and Tommie Smith did the black power salute on the Olympic medal podium. The salute was done in protest of the racial injustices blacks were facing in America. At the time their gesture was seen as a very disrespectful airing of the country's dirty laundry on the world stage. Carlos and Smith were immediately suspended from the U.S. Olympic team and received death threats for years after returning home. Today Carlos and Smith are seen as Civil Rights heroes and were honored with a statue in 2005 at their alma mater, San Jose State University. What a difference a few decades makes...

Craig Hodges

DATE: 1992
ACT: Delivering a hand-written note to President George H. W. Bush criticizing the administrations treatment of minorities and the poor.
COMPLEX SAYS: After the Chicago Bulls won an NBA title in 1992, they were invited to the White House by President George H.W. Bush. Hodges saw the invite as an opportunity to voice his political concerns to Bush. He showed up wearing a dashiki and delivered his letter to the President. Hodges was waived by the Bulls in the off-season and believes that his political actions, not his play, were the main reason behind him being dropped from team. In 1996, after years out of the league, Hodges filed a $40 million lawsuit against the NBA.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf

DATE: 3/12/1996
ACT: Refusal to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner."
COMPLEX SAYS: During 1995-96 season Abdul-Rauf's refusal to stand for the "Star-Spangled Banner" caused the league to issue the Denver Nuggets guard a one-game suspension. His reasoning for not standing was that he believed the American flag represented "oppression and tyranny" both of which go against his Islamic faith. Two days later, the league and Abdul-Rauf made a compromise which required him to stand but allowed him to bow his head in prayer during the anthem.

Toni Smith

DATE: 2003
ACT: Turning her back during the "Star-Spangled Banner."
COMPLEX SAYS: During the 2003 season, Manhattanville college basketball player Toni Smith would turn her back during the "Star-Spangled Banner" before games to protest "the inequalities that are embedded into the American system." Smith started to receive attention for the act after their game against Mount St. Mary. On February 11, when they traveled to play the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the crowd of more than 300 jeered at Smith and spent most of the game chanting "U-S-A" and "Leave our country."

Carlos Delgado

DATE: 7/21/2004
ACT: Protests Iraq War by silently staying in the dugout during the singing of "God Bless America."
COMPLEX SAYS: Delgado's passive form of protest had gone unnoticed by fans and some of his teammates until he voiced his opposition to the war in an interview with the Toronto Star. “It’s a very terrible thing that happened on September 11. It’s also a terrible thing that happened in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Delgado said. The Puerto Rico native continued by saying he feels sad for the family of those killed in the war but that "it's the stupidest war ever." On July 21, fans at Yankee stadium showed their disgust with Delgado (see photo above) while others showed signs of their support. Something we all can agree on: Though not his fault, Delgado's tenure with the Mets was during a time when the Messropolitans had some of their biggest fails.

Josh Howard

DATE: 9/16/2008
ACT: Says he refuses to sing the "Star-Spangled Banner" because he's black.
COMPLEX SAYS: During a charity flag football game hosted by Allen Iverson in the summer of 2008, Howard's comments were captured on cell phone camera and made public two months later. About a week afterward, Howard apologized for his comments saying "It was me joking around. Guys were out there making fun and I decided to get along in it. I wasn't using my head. I guess the valuable lesson I did learn is that words really do hurt. You're held accountable for what you say." The next season Howard was traded from the title-contending Mavericks to the Washington Wizards. No real chance at a title, but maybe dude will get to work on his patriotism while in D.C.

James Harrison

DATE: 5/18/2009
ACT: Refuses to go to the White House after Pittsburgh Steelers victory party.
COMPLEX SAYS: After winning Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers, as most championship teams in major sports are, were invited to the White House by President Barack Obama. Linebacker James Harrison turned down the invite saying he didn't feel it was that big of a deal and that Obama would have invited the Cardinals instead had they won. Uhh...yeah, the league definitely needs to do something about those head shots.

Luke Scott

DATE: 12/7/2010
ACT: Says he believes President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.
COMPLEX SAYS: In an interview where he criticized the current administration's policies, Baltimore Oriole Luke Scott joined the legion of birthers by saying he doesn't believe President Obama was born in America. Despite the White House releasing Obama's birth certificate, Scott repeated his doubts and claims the birth certificate could be a fake. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but when you're a baseball player hitting sixth for one of league's most embarrassing franchises, no one really gives a fuck about your political opinion. Stay in your lane, son.

Rashard Mendenhall

DATE: 5/2/2011
ACT: Posted tweets criticizing celebrations of the death of Osama Bin Laden.
COMPLEX SAYS: While many took the streets celebrating the death of the Al Qaeda figurehead behind the 9/11 attacks, Mendenhall took to twitter to criticize their actions and state his belief in 9/11 conspiracy theories. "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they never even heard speak. We've only heard one side...," Mendenhall continued by questioning the destruction of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. "We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style." The Steeler running back later said he didn't mean to cause harm to anyone but just wanted to "generate conversation." Well, you were successful in doing that. Now let's just work on securing the ball in those critical late-game situations. Ah, fuck it. There might not even be a Super Bowl next year.

Pacquiao toys with Mosley, crowd not overly pleased with easy win

Sunday, May 8, 2011 |

LAS VEGAS _ Coming into tonight's mega-fight, there were legitimate fears that 39-year-old Shane Mosley just didn't have enough left in the tank to give Manny Pacquaio a real challenge. The promotion made a boatload of money and probably sold a ton of pay-per-views, but those fears were realized and some fight fans walked away disappointed with both sides.
Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KOs) scored a knock down in the third and pressured Mosley the rest of the way, but couldn't finish him. On the other side, Mosley was helpless, barely averaged 20 punches per round. Pacquiao rolled to a less than thrilling  unanimous decision victory, 120-108, 120-107 and 119-108, in front of 16,412 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
"We did our best to put on a good fight. I tried to do my best," Pacquiao told Showtime's Jim Gray. "I want to move in the middle rounds, my legs just got tight. It was a problem before when I fought Marquez."
Pacquiao explained that the cramps arrived in the fourth and his left leg didn't loosen up again until the 10th round according to Arum.
Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KOs) never loosened up. He only threw 260 punches over the 12 rounds. The crowd got on him over the last three rounds when he threw virtually nothing (only landed 18 punches from rounds 10-12). He did get credit for knocking down Pacquiao, sort of.
With just over a minute left in the 10th, the fighters clashed and Mosley pushed Pacman to the ground. Referee Kenny Bayless called it a knockdown and started counting. Pacquiao laughed and fought angrily over the final 60 seconds of the round. After the fight, Mosley admitted that it was a slip. Bayless also told Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach that he made a mistake.{ysp: more}
Mosley landed 82 punches to Pacquiao's 182. This was title fight No. 21 for Mosley and the wear and tear from 54 fights was clear. Mosley simply couldn't catch the younger, faster Pacquiao. He landed five combinations the entire fight. Pacquiao, 32, also attempted 552 punches, but even that was down from his norm.
During the postfight press conference, Mosley said he was having trouble with his right foot. From the sixth round on, a blister on the foot served as a "distraction."
The issue of Floyd Mayweather was addressed after the fight by both Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum. Pacman said he won't lose any sleep if he never fights Mayweather, but he knows the fans want the match, so he'll take the fight if its made.
Arum said as soon as Mayweather wants the fight, he knows where to call. The 79-year-old promoter, who used to work with Floyd Jr.  said his relationship with the fighter is fine. It's just a matter of when and if Mayweather wants the fight. He pointed out that Mayweather has mentioned a tune-up fight before facing Pacquiao. That would push a possible matchup into 2012.
Meanwhile, the plan is for Pacquiao to fight some time in November, either on the 5th or 12th in Las Vegas. The MGM would host a Nov. 5 fight with the Thomas & Mack Center serving as the possible home on Nov. 12.
Arum listed the probable opponents as Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley or Zab Judah. Arum believes all three would make for a good promotion. Arum and Top Rank officials met with JuanMan on Saturday morning in Las Vegas where he was given a new offer for the fight. The offer included changes that Marquez requested. Arum believes Marquez will accept the fight if Golden Boy Promotions doesn't block the fight. Marquez has split from Golden Boy, but the promotion still has the first right of refusal on any fight. Marquez has also talked about fighting during the summer against David Diaz.
Marquez and Pacquiao have fought twice, with Pacman taking fight No. 2. The first ended in a draw.

25 of the best booties in sports today

Friday, May 6, 2011 |

Inevitably, there will be names on this list that you don’t recognize, and frankly, that’s a good thing. We’ve done our due diligence and scoured the ends of the internet to find you the very best that female athletes have to offer. And those athletes are active today. So you won’t see an Anna Kournikova, a Martina Hingis, a Sacha Cohen or any other retired or pseudo sports figure here. Nope, just hard working women who sweat day in and day out to be the best they can be.
25 Jelena Dokic
Jelena Dokic 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
At one time, Jelena Dokic was ranked as high as #4 in the world. But she fell on tough times more than four years ago and has struggled to get her game back into form. She did however finish last year in the top 100 and earlier this year defeated French Open champion Francesca Schiavone. I think everyone would agree that they’d love to see more of Jelena Dokic on the women’s circuit.
24 Erika Prezerakou
Erika Prezerakou e1304603024170 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
This Greek bombshell initially broke into the athletic scene as a successful pole vaulter. Soon, someone realized that her assets should probably be flaunted outside of the track and field arena and put her on the Greek version of Dancing with the Stars. And frankly, why not. With those long legs and uh, rather voluptuous figure, she’s a star in the making.
23 Julia Mancuso
Julia Mancuso1 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Julia Mancuso was a successful skier well before the Vancouver Olympics, but the 2012 games certainly made her a household name. Having won gold at the Giant Slalom in Turin in 2008, Mancuso followed that up with two silvers in Vancouver. She also, hilariously has an underwear line called “Kiss my Tiara”. Adorable and a sense of humor–good combination.
22Miesha Tate
Miesha Tate 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
When you think of sexy sports, MMA probably doesn’t come to mind. Women beating on each other mercilessly in an octagon isn’t exactly what most men dream of. But girls like Miesha Tate make you think otherwise. Not only is she the current Freestyle Cage Fighting Women’s Bantamweight Champion but she’s also won a silver medal at the FILA Grappling Championships. That’s well beyond KY Jelly and mud wrestling isn’t it?
21 Serena Williams
Serena Williams1 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Perhaps no woman’s body on this list is more controversial than Serena Williams. Ask a dozen men what they think and you’ll get differing opinions from each one. When she shows up in a bikini on Miami beach, it’s quite stunning to say the least. There’s only so much fabric one can have on a two piece to hold back a behind as large and as in charge as hers. She’s been out of the game for awhile but a comeback is in the works this summer.
20 Gina Carano
Gina Carano 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Gina Carano is easily one of the famous names in MMA, be it male or female. At a weigh-in for a fight in 2008, people wondered if Carano could make weight. After a few attempts with her clothes on, Carano just decided the hell with it and stripped down to nothing. Unfortunately for the viewing audience, everything was hidden behind a towel but men everywhere became infatuated with her after the show. Like Serena, she’s been out of the game for awhile but is making her triumphant return to the ring in June.
19 Alicia Sacramone
Alicia Sacramone 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Alicia Sacramone is one of the most recognized names in women’s gymnastics today. After she was blamed by many for the U.S. team losing the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Sacramone decided to call it quits. But the retirement was only temporary as she returned from shoulder surgery in 2009. With a gold at the World Championships on the vault in 2010, it’s safe to say Sacramone is intending on staying in the sport to make another Olympic run in two years.
18Doris Vrecko
Dorris Vrecko e1304603230897 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
The name Doris Vrecko probably doesn’t ring any bells does it? Doris is a Croatian fencing champion and a very good one at that. In fact, she’s been the best at her sport in the country ten times. Say what you will about fencing not exactly being a popular sport, when you’re the best of the best that many times, it’s impressive. She mostly does broadcasting these days but still remains an active fencer.
17 Yelena Isinbayeva
Yelena Isinbayeva e1304606388309 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Isinbayeva is arguably one of the best pole vaulters of all-time. She’s the reigning Olympic champion having won gold at Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. On a side note, it really is incredible how “fit” the women in pole vaulting are. We’ve already shown you Greek hottie Erika Prezerakou and who can forget Cal vaulter Allison Stokke, who lit the internet on fire just a few years ago. Truly a hidden gem of extremely curvaceous and attractive women.

16 Ana Ivanovic
Ana Ivanovic 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
The up and down career of Ana Ivanovic is currently in the latter stage right now. She’s been as high as #1 in 2008 but currently sits at #17 in the world. Although she has 10 WTA titles, she has only won once at a Grand Slam event defeating Dinara Safina at the French Open in 2008. Ivanovic has had numerous other chances but surprisingly has played bad in Grand Slam finals. That aside, she’s one of the famous athletes in Serbia and easily, one of it’s sexiest.
15 Bruna Schmitz
Bruna Schmirz 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Surfing is not exactly a very popular sport here in the mainland so the name Bruna Schmitz probably won’t elicit any kind of response from you. But remember the name as Schmitz quietly moves up the rankings on the ASP Women’s World Tour. More importantly, (for the viewing audience that is), Schmitz was one of the lovely ladies of this past Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Certainly one of the few times a surfer has been featured in the coveted issue.
14 Carolina Salgado
Carolina Salgado 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Evidently you can’t have a list like “best booties in sports today” and not include at least one Brazilian beach volleyball player. Carolina Salgado has a rich volleyball background as both her sister and mother had successful careers on the beach. Salgado won gold at the 2004 FIVB Under-18 World Championships and expects to compete for a medal at the next Olympics.
13 Natalie Gulbis
Natalie Gulbis1 e1304607257992 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Years ago, Natalie Gulbis was labeled as the Anna Kournikova of golf. A great talent but more or less a sex symbol. She certainly didn’t help her cause when she came out with a racy swimsuit calendar prior to the 2004 U.S. Open. But she’s changed all that in the last few years and seems much more focused on golf. Her first and only career win came in 2007 at the Evian Masters. She’s been in a bit of slump lately but regularly finishes in the top 25 on the LPGA money list.
12 Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
The current #1 female ranked tennis player in the world, Caroline Wozniacki is a favorite here on Guyism. Whether it’s her stunning and rather short Stella McCartney outfit at last year’s U.S. Open or her crazy stories about kangaroos attacking her in Australia, Wozniacki finds a way to make headlines. She has yet to breakthrough at a Grand Slam event, but most people believe it’s just a matter of time.
11 Laisa Andrioli
Laisa Andrioli e1304603430595 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Laisa Andrioli is a Brazilian soccer player who plays on the national team. Trust me, that may not seem like a big thing here in the States, but playing nationally for your team in Brazil is a pretty big deal. Especially given the fierce competition on the women’s side. Though Andrioli makes her living as a soccer player, she also does some modeling on the side. Some may recognize her from a nude Sexy magazine spread in 2008. We’ll let you do the digging yourself, but suffice it to say, it’s best you do the digging when your significant other is not around.
10 Anastasia Ashley
Anastasia Ashley 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Admittedly, we don’t know much about Anastasia Ashley outside of the fact that she’s considered one of the hottest female surfers around. We do know however that she’s a vegetarian and was nominated by PETA as one of the Sexiest Vegeterians alive. Although we’re not on the up and up with our MTV watching these days, last year, the World of Jenks documented her life for a week. If you’re a new fan like we are, we suggest scouring the internet to find it.
9 Elena Dementieva
Elena Dementieva e1304606843316 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
We know we said we wouldn’t put retired athletes on here, but in the world of women’s tennis, retirements are essentially just reasons to take extended vacations. Just ask Justine Henin or Kim Clijsters. That aside, Elena Dementieva is a two-time Grand Slam winner and famously won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There are already rumors that she’s making a comeback and at 29, probably still has a few good years of tennis left in her. But admittedly, the rigors of the tennis tour has taken a toll on many athletes bodies and a rest would probably do her some good.
8 Lindsey Vonn
Lindsey Vonn 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Lindsey Vonn is everywhere these days. In what usually amounts to 15 minutes of fame for athletes after the Olympics (Apollo Ohno and Michael Phelps), Vonn has somehow turned it into a several year stint. And as fans, we welcome it. She’s had extreme success as as Alpine skier and is widely considered one of the best in the world. Aside from that, she recently did a hilarious spoof of Sharon Stone’s famous upskirt scene in Basic Instinct for ESPN. Worth a look or two.
7 Hannah Teter
Hannah Teter 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
You may remember Hannah Teter from her 2010 sexy spread in Sports Illustrated. The snowboarder, however, wants to be known for much more than her work on the halfpipe. Teter is extremely focused on charity work, specifically in Africa. Her newest initiative is called “Sweet Cheeks” which donates more than 40% of underwear sales to partner organization Children International to help feed children living in extreme poverty around the world.
6 Michelle Waterson
Michelle Waterson 1 e1304619391152 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Probably the coolest thing about Michelle Waterson is that her nickname is “The Karate Hottie”. She has an 8-3 record as an MMA fighter but most people remember her as as a contestant on the Muay Thai-themed Fight Girls reality show on Oxygen. She’s stepped away from the ring recently to have a baby, but like others on the list, is making a comeback in the near future.
5 Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
What’s there to say about Maria Sharapova that hasn’t already been said. Last year, when word leaked out that she was engaged to NBA guard Sasha Vujacic, every man around the world collectively shed a tear. She’s widely considered the sexiest woman in tennis and one of the hottest female athletes in the world. Sharapova has struggled with a shoulder injury the last few years that has limited her on the courts but a recent coaching swamp in 2011 may help regain that #1 ranking she so desperately seeks again.
4 Alana Blanchard
Alana Blanchard 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Of the surfers on our list, Blanchard’s name is probably the most recognizable. And as hot as she is and as much success as she has had worldwide, her most famous feat has literally nothing to do with surfing. Blanchard helped rescue surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm during a shark attack in 2003. It was Blanchard, along with her father and brother who got Hamilton to shore and somehow saved her after the loss of almost 3 liters of blood. Truly, the sexiest humanitarian on our list.
3 Leryn Franco
Leryn Franco e1304619573101 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
When the camera panned to Leryn Franco during the opening games of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it literally caused a movement in the jeans of every heterosexual male in the world. The Paraguayan javelin thrower and model is everywhere now, regularly appearing in photoshoots and magazines every few months. We’ve yet to hear if she’ll be around for London in 2012, but we can tell you that we pray to God every night that she does.
2 Brittany Johnson
Brittany Johnson 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
Brittany Johnson goes to TWU (Texas Women’s University) and is the current USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate all-around champion. In laymen’s terms, Johnson is one of the best gymnasts in the world right now. Unfortunately we don’t know much else about Johnson, but frankly who cares. She’s hot, she has an incredible body and is awesome at the sport she competes in. That’s enough for us.
1 Misty May-Treanor
Misty May Treanor 135x95 25 of the best booties in sports today
We’re absolutely infatuated with Misty May-Treanor (although, we’re slightly upset we have to hyphenate her name now). May-Treanor is the most successful beach volleyball player of all-time with 107 career wins. Along with her playing partner Kerri Walsh, the two have combined to win gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. But more importantly, May-Treanor has arguably the most famous posterior, regardless of sport. It helps that her employment requires a skimpy bikini.

For the first time in their careers, Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki will square off in the playoffs. Considering the Lakers and Mavericks have both been Western Conference powerhouses for over a decade, this makes the upcoming match-up between the Mavericks and Lakers all the more anticipated.

After a shaky start to their first-round series with New Orleans, the Lakers bounced back and eliminated the Hornets in six games.

The Mavericks are coming off a first-round matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers. After losing Game 4, despite holding a 20 point fourth quarter lead, the Mavericks impressively won Games 5 and 6 to closeout the series.

Before the Lakers and Mavericks begin their series Monday night in Los Angeles, let’s take a look at 5 things to keep an eye on throughout the course of the series.

5. Lamar Odom versus Jason Terry

Odom and Terry are arguably the two best sixth men in the NBA. Lamar Odom won this year’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, and Jason Terry won the award in 2009.

In the six games against Portland in the first-round, Terry averaged 17 points and nearly four assists a game.

Odom was below his season averages (14 points and eight rebounds) in the Lakers’ first-round series against New Orleans, averaging 12 points and six boards a contest.

Whichever player wins this crucial “sixth man” battle will put his team in great position to win the series.

4. Mavericks are always “in the zone”

No body played zone defense as frequently or effectively in the NBA this season than the Mavericks.

Therefore, Kobe and the Lakers should expect to see a fair share of zone throughout the series.

If the Lakers are patient enough to attack the gaps in the zone and feed Gasol, Bynum and Odom, there is no reason why they should struggle against it.

What the Lakers don’t want to do is get impatient and turn into a jump shooting team against the Mavericks’ zone.

The Lakers are not a great outside shooting team, but they go through periods where they tend to neglect their advantage in the paint and shoot too many jumpers.

The Lakers cannot afford to go through one of those stretches against Dallas.

3. Confidence

Whether it was their collapse in the 2006 Finals against Miami or being upset in the first-round in 2007 against Golden State, the Mavericks playoff troubles are well documented.

It looked as though the Mavericks were ready to add to their list of playoff shortcomings this season, after blowing a 20 point fourth quarter lead to Portland in Game 4.

But the Mavericks silenced their critics temporarily by winning Games 5 and 6 and closing out the series in Portland.

However, is everyone truly convinced all of the demons have been exorcised?

I have a hard time seeing the Mavericks beating the Lakers in a seven game series. Let’s just hope the Mavericks don’t think the same way.

2. Haywood and Chandler

Much has been made this season about Tyson Chandler transforming the Mavericks from an average defensive team to a good defensive team.

Many think Chandler’s defensive presence is the missing piece of the championship puzzle for the Mavericks.

All of this will be put to the test as Chandler and Brendan Haywood will have the pleasure of trying to slowdown Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom.

Odom and Gasol both had a mediocre series against New Orleans and will be looking to bounce back.

If Chandler and Haywood are able to slow the Lakers’ three-headed front court monster enough to give Dallas a series victory, they should have statues erected in front of the American Airlines Center.

1. Defending Dirk and Kobe

At this point, I think it is fair to call the Dirk vs. Kobe match-up a wash statistically. Both players are great, and they will more than likely get theirs throughout the series.

Ultimately, the Lakers have a little more personnel to slowdown Dirk than the Mavericks have to slowdown Kobe. Artest, Odom, Gasol and even Kobe will probably all have their respective opportunities to try and slowdown Nowitzki throughout the series.

It will be up to DeShawn Stevenson and Shawn Marion to try and slowdown Kobe.
